Getting Started with EncodeX
New to EncodeX? Follow these steps to start converting and editing your videos:
-
Install from Microsoft Store
Search for "EncodeX" in the Microsoft Store or visit our download page to get the app. -
Launch and load a media file
Open EncodeX and drag a video file onto the window, or use File → Open to browse. -
Set your In and Out points
Use the timeline to mark the exact frames where you want your clip to start and end. The keyboard shortcuts I (In) and O (Out) make this quick. -
Choose your output format
Select the desired format and quality settings from the export panel. For web delivery, MP4 with H.264 is recommended. -
Export your video
Click Export and choose your destination. EncodeX will process the video with frame-accurate precision.
Common Questions
Does EncodeX upload my files anywhere?
No. EncodeX is designed for complete offline operation. All video processing happens locally on your computer. Your files never leave your machine, and no data is sent to external servers.
Why is video preview slow or choppy?
Large files or high-bitrate footage (especially 4K or ProRes) can be demanding to preview in real-time. Try these solutions:
- Enable proxy mode for smoother playback during editing
- Move your source files to an SSD instead of a mechanical drive
- Close other applications that may be using CPU or disk resources
- Ensure your system meets the recommended requirements (8GB RAM, SSD storage)
Is rotation automatically applied during export?
Yes. EncodeX reads rotation metadata from smartphone and camera footage and applies the correct orientation during export. This ensures your videos play correctly on all devices and platforms.
What video formats are supported?
EncodeX supports most common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, and many more. It can handle various codecs including H.264, H.265 (HEVC), ProRes, and DNxHR. For a complete overview, see our formats and codecs guide.
Can I convert multiple files at once?
Yes. EncodeX includes batch export functionality. Add multiple files to your queue, configure your settings once, and let EncodeX process them all sequentially. Learn more in our batch conversion guide.
Troubleshooting Guide
Export fails or stops unexpectedly
If your export fails, try these steps:
- Check disk space: Ensure you have enough free space for the output file. Video files can be large, especially at high quality settings.
- Verify source file: The source file may be corrupted or incomplete. Try playing it in another application to confirm it works.
- Check output path: Make sure you have write permissions to the destination folder.
- Test with a short clip: Try exporting just a few seconds first to verify your settings work correctly.
- Antivirus interference: Some antivirus software may block the encoding process. Try adding EncodeX to your antivirus exclusions.
Video looks wrong after export
- Wrong aspect ratio: Check that your export settings match your source video's aspect ratio.
- Color issues: Different codecs handle color differently. For accurate colors, ensure you're using compatible color space settings.
- Quality too low: Increase the bitrate or quality setting in your export configuration.
Audio out of sync
Audio sync issues are usually caused by variable frame rate (VFR) source footage, common in screen recordings and some smartphone videos. EncodeX handles most VFR content correctly, but extremely irregular frame rates may require pre-processing.
Application won't start
- Ensure you're running Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit)
- Try restarting your computer
- Reinstall from the Microsoft Store
- Check for Windows updates
Performance Tips
- Use SSD storage: Solid-state drives dramatically improve both preview playback and export speed compared to mechanical hard drives.
- Close background applications: Video encoding is CPU-intensive. Close unnecessary programs to give EncodeX more resources.
- Use consistent formats: When working with multiple files, using the same format and resolution for all source files improves efficiency.
- Enable hardware acceleration: If your system supports it, hardware encoding can significantly speed up exports.
- Work with proxies: For 4K or high-bitrate footage, use proxy files for editing and let EncodeX export from the original sources.
